Cat ferry to assist trans-Atlantic rower BAR HARBOR, Maine — A transportation company that ferries passengers and vehicles between Maine and Nova Scotia is helping a man who plans to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean later this year.
Today the Cat, a high-speed catamaran ferry that operates between Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, three days a week, expects to give New York City resident Victor Mooney and a specially designed rowboat a lift across the Gulf of Maine to Bar Harbor. Bay Ferries, the company that operates the Cat, announced the planned ride Thursday in a press release.
The rowboat recently was given to Mooney by another man who has tried and failed three times to row across the Atlantic. Charlie Girard tried in May to row from Cape Cod to France but abandoned the boat 10 days into his trip after being rescued at sea by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Canadian Coast Guard later picked up the drifting rowboat and took it back to Yarmouth.
Mooney, 43, an AIDS activist, has changed the name of the boat from Caliste to Never Give Up, according to Bay Ferries. He hopes to begin his trans-Atlantic row from the Cape Verde Islands, off the west coast of Africa, to New York City on Dec. 1, which is World AIDS Day.
The attempt will be the third for Mooney in as many rowboats. His most recent try in April ended when equipment on his previous boat that was supposed to make saltwater drinkable failed.
Mooney was expected to ride on the Cat from Portland to Yarmouth on Sunday and return to Bar Harbor with the rowboat on a trailer this evening. From there he plans to drive, with the rowboat in tow, to New York, where he will train for the crossing.

Good intentions. Bad idea. The Coast Guard must get tired of these guys. Taxpayers should not shoulder the cost of rescues. Make the adventurers post a bond prior to departure for any recovery expenses. Remember the guy from Mechanic Falls and the amount of money spent in attempts to find him? Sorry, but this is enough foolishness.
